Longchamp is celebrating the reopening of its newly renovated Rome flagship with a reception inside the boutique on Thursday, October 17th 2024. In line with the House’s global design concept, the store has been revisited in the spirit of a quintessential Parisian apartment. Throughout, vintage-style furniture and one-off decorative objects create a lovingly curated, home-from-home ambiance, while different spaces, each with their unique theme, such as a walk-in closet for the ready-to-wear collection, are an invitation to wander from room to room. The effect is further enhanced by heritage designs from the Longchamp archives and contemporary works from its art collection.

Taking place during the Rome film Fest, the reopening event highlights Longchamp’s links with art and cinema, notably through a collaboration with French artist Oscar Malessène. Longchamp already counts several works by the artist in its collection, but for this occasion commissioned a new work, entitled To Love with Rome (The Great Beauty).
Cinema, alongside jazz and literature, is a rich source of inspiration for Oscar Malessène, whose works frequently play on film titles. His abstract art – marked by rigorous geometry, bold use of color and striking optical effects – is never a direct homage to a particular film, but rather evokes a certain ambiance, imbued with personal impressions and biographical reminiscences. To Love with Rome (The Great Beauty) alludes to films by Woody Allen and Paolo Sorrentino, both cinematic frescoes of the Italian capital – an effect suggested in the painting itself by a continuous band of Longchamp dark green, which also evokes the unbroken chronology of the House. Juxtaposed with the dark green is the lighter green used by Longchamp to symbolize energy, while the pale blue background and vibrant orange pyramids – a favorite motif of the artist – convey the dynamic, optimistic vision which is shared by Oscar Malessène and Longchamp.

This new commission To Love with Rome (The Great Beauty), integrated into Scripto Sensu, will be exhibited in Longchamp’s Rome boutique alongside nine other artworks by Oscar Malessène for the duration of the Rome film Fest which runs from October 16th to 27th 2024. The works are united by the common theme of cinema and include the diptychs Finzi et Contini, playing on Vittorio De Sica’s classic The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, and Bleu mécanique II, referencing Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.
Following the reception on October 17th, the Longchamp boutique will be opened as usual at the Piazza di Spagna, 82 – a prestigious address at the foot of Rome’s iconic Spanish Steps.
