The Parisian Underbelly

The thought of Parisian fashion initially brings to mind several well-established design houses, but I've recently discovered that Paris has been developing a talented underbelly of smaller labels.

The first clue came in San Francisco, when I stumbled upon the small but well-stocked jewelry boutique Chariots on Fire. It was there that I found a small piece of Paris: Natalia Brilli's leather-bound "pearl" necklaces, Victorian-inspired brooches, and snakeskin bangles.

Interest piqued, I had to do more digging. If there was one underground Parisian goldmine, could there be more?

Indeed. My next discovery, Heimstone, came on the other side of the country — at Jumelle in Brooklyn. Empire waistlines and flared skirts dominate the year-old label, which is helmed by two French femmes, Alix Petit and Delphine Delafon.

With all this burgeoning talent to unearth, what else can I say but vive la France (in California and New York)!

Globe Trotting Invaders

A larger than life exhibition that travels from city to city...a mission made by Space Invader!

This French artist has been anonymously taking wave in cities around the world since 1990, splashing its walls with strange mosaics in the shape of martians that represent the characters of the famous 1970s video game "Space Invaders."

Since their first raid in Paris 17 years ago, Space Invaders have infested many walls in Tokyo, Amsterdam, Bangkok, New York, Cologne, and more recently Bilbao, among many others.

The latest noteworthy invasion took place on the renowned HOLLYWOOD letters in Los Angeles, debuting at the time of passage into 2000.

The positions of these pieces are elaborately chosen by their author, and constitute for its followers in search of new mosaics, a life size treasure hunt throughout major cities.
